No wonder I feel like I don't have any money: I just found two uncashed checks, one for $100 and the other for $930. <sigh>

Oh my! I think I like your version of financial incompetence better than mine.

I have a better excuse for having no money, as you know, but I had an interesting experience today. I called two of my credit card companies to cancel my accounts, and both told me I had a small credit. Both will be sending me the credit amount as checks.

They were very reluctant to let me go, even assuming I stopped using their services. One of them offered to give me a 5% rebate on everything through next March if I would keep the account open. The best rebate I've been getting up 'til now is 3%, from AmEx, and that applies only to purchases from restaurants. If I'm going to spend the money anyway and if I'm going to pay it off immediately, why not take advantage of their generosity? They are sending me a special new card with the details of the deal shown on the plastic. And if I never use it, it costs me nothing.
