Laptop woes

My current AC adaptor is no longer charging my laptop, so I am currently without a functioning laptop. This is the fourth AC adaptor I have gone through, three manufactured by IBM and another by Targus. I am reluctant to spend another $40+ on an adaptor if the problem is not the adaptors. I buy a new one, and it works for a few months, but is the problem really the adaptor and not the computer? My first adaptor lasted well over a year; my last one, maybe 3-4 months. Anybody (hello pinkfish!) want to crack open my laptop to see if the problem may lie therein? I could leave it with you on Friday night, since I'll be out of town all day Saturday at a rugby match in Norwalk.

This may be a stupid question, but have you tried taking it to a repair shop?

Now see, that would be the sensible thing to do!

I was hoping to avoid spending money on repairs, but it looks like I won't have a choice. Now I have to figure out where the nearest IBM-approved place is. The machine is no longer under warranty, I don't think.
