Misinterpreting Omens

Last night, during the short walk between the building I work in and the parking garage, I was presented with three scenes that, seen as a whole, could be regarded portentous:

  1. Upon leaving the medical school building, I saw a young man hopping away on two crutches, his right leg missing.

  2. Halfway to the parking garage, I saw a woman hobbling away on one crutch, a boot cast on her right leg.

  3. Crossing the street in front of the garage, I saw a young woman limping away in the other direction, no crutches and both legs unfettered, but clearly favoring her right leg.

I thought to myself as I crossed the street, "I need to do a phone post before rugby practice, because if I break my right leg at practice nobody will believe it was foreordained!"

I did not injure myself at practice — it was a non-contact practice — but I have had a throbbing pain in my left ear ever since!
