My Tivo seems to be dying. It is perpetually "powering up" — stuck on the screen that says "powering up." I don't know what is causing it to power down in the first place, whether the hard drive is dying or if it's related to the fan, or something else. Any thoughts?

In the meantime, the Panamá-Guatemala World Cup qualifying match is tonight at 8 p.m. Because my Tivo is down right now, I haven't been able to determine whether the game's on Galavision, Telefutura, or Univision. Can someone verify this and record the game for me? I would be most appreciative. Thank you.

Have your tried their online tech support? I had trouble with my TiVo recently and the info there fixed it, although your problem sounds a lot nastier than mine. Try this: <http://customersupport.tivo.com/knowbase/root/public/tv050282.htm?>

i think that by "powering up" it really means "i'm being a little bitch and want to be thrown out the window."

TiVo
TiVo runs some variety of Linux. Surely you can attach a keyboard / monitor and go into the OS and run some diagnostics.

Re: TiVo
It's far more complicated that. We have to connect to the machine from another machine; we can't just plug in a keyboard. But in order to connect to the machine, we'd need to purchase a special connector that I don't have. Yes, Tivo runs linux, and I have the Tivo Hacks book that explains how I can do a bunch of command-line stuff, but accessing the shell is difficult.
