I learned something new about London last night. Simply standing at the curb at the bus stop with an expectant look on one's face is not enough to convince the bus to stop. One must actively wave down the bus, at least after hours. I discovered this as I stood in the rain waiting for 45 minutes late last night.

This is apparently also true in Fort Lauderdale. Bastards.

It's occasionally true in Boston, for that matter.

If the bus stop sign says "Request Stop" then you must wave the bus down, or it will not stop. If the bus stop sign does not say that, then the bus is supposedly required to stop for you whether you wave it down or not. However, to be safe, put your Oyster card in your hand and extend it into the street from the curb.
