This is one of the eternal and inarguable truths (no doubt there are people who disagree, but they're wrong.

But I'm curious: what inspired this observation at this particular moment?

Listening to DG at work and fighting the urge not to cause a spectacle by singing along.

A most inappropriate urge for an opera singer. (Yeah, I knew what you meant.)

_Die Zauberfloete_ rocks.

(Yeah, I know, technically it's a singspiel not an opera.)

I don't make the distinction, either.

Neither does anyone else, unless they're (1) writing a treatise/giving a lecture on music history for which the distinction is relevant, or (2) playing gotcha.

I'm a verismo guy; while I acknowledge the big M's genius, sure, give me Tosca any day.

Tosca is my favorite Puccini opera, followed by La Bohème. I'm not sure there's anything vero about verismo, though. Admit it, you just love melodrama! :-p

I would say Tosca is probably my third favorite opera, after Le nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni.
