I was pleased to read that today (Saturday) South Africa won its bid to host the 2010 World Cup. I had, a few days ago, read an analysis of the several proposals from the African countries. I thought Morocco and Tunisia put forth strong proposals, and Egypt's was credible as well. (Libya was pure wishful thinking, as it lacks both the infrastructure and the funds necessary for such an event, not to mention that it's, well, Libya!) I did think, though, that South Africa's bid was the strongest. Moreover, I think this could be a genuine opportunity for South Africa to mend the racial, social, and political divides that have torn this nation apart. We'll have the opportunity to see sports doing what it does every day in the backlots of our inner-cities, only on an international stage, as a common love of the game will bring millions of people of different backgrounds together, working towards a common goal. This is huge, for sport and for South Africa!
