I do a semi-weekly crossword competition with Hap at work. (We use the New York Times puzzle.) Wednesday is more of a warm-up, since that puzzle is generally pretty easy. Friday is the real contest, if you can call it that. In 5+ years of doing this, I have only beaten Hap twice, and he won't acknowledge those wins. I have never beaten him on an occasion when he didn't have to "take a break" towards the end of a difficult, closely-contested puzzle.

Today I finished the puzzle seconds before him. I was able to beat him to the finish because I knew who Terrence McNally was, having seen a production of Macbeth he directed at the La Jolla Playhouse before he hit it off on Broadway. However, I had a mistake. I didn't know where Acre was, and didn't know the Juan who was a cubist pioneer, so I ventured a guess. Thus, I had
                                       I
                                    GRIO
                                       R

instead of
                                       I
                                    GRIS
                                       R

Had I not gotten that one little letter wrong, I finally would have had my first uncontested win!
