Last night was the end-of-the-season softball barbecue, and it reminded me that I owe y'all a season recap.
We had a very good team this year. As long as our top 2 players were there, we were either in the game or we won the game. Towards the end of the season, though, our top player broke his hand (chasing a squirrel) and our second best player started missing games due to other obligations. We backed into the playoffs as the 4th seed in our division.
Despite being without Geoff, our top player (our best hitter and baserunner and our centerfielder), we played the best game we have ever played. Our second best player, Noah, was there and played 3B. Double plays are unheard of in our league, and Noah turned three of them! Our bats came alive as well. We beat a good team and advanced to the second round of the playoffs.
The second round game was a study in opposites. I am convinced that if we had been at full strength we would have won a close game and advanced to the semi-finals. But we were without Geoff, without Noah, and without David, our 4th best player and starting SS. Our 3rd best player, Mike, is good, but he can't carry the team by himself. I was forced to start in the field, which is dangerous. We lost 15-0, and I think I was responsible for giving up 10 of the runs. All runs were given up on what normally would have been routine outs.
The team that went on to win the championship in the co-rec league was my former team. I would have loved to beat them this year! Next year we'll win it all! :)
The barbecue last night was a lot of fun. There were hamburgers & hotdogs, potato salad, corn on the cob, watermelon, beer, juice...and there were homerun contests for men and women, in addition to league awards. Purulent Sputum didn't have any entries in the women's homerun contest but we had two in the men's, the two worst men on the team, me and Jason. Jason did manage to hit a homerun. I came close, but I was only given four swings. Purulent Sputum did take one league award, though: I was chosen "Most Intense Captain." You can see my award below:
All in all, it was a great season and a great end-of-the-year barbecue!
