I discovered a gem of a song today -- serene yet deeply moving -- in the most unlikely of places, a violent, bloody, Denzel Washington action movie.

The song is "Una Palabra," by Cuban singer-songwriter Carlos Varela:

Listen to the song.

Una PalabraOne Word
una palabra no dice nada
y al mismo tiempo lo esconde todo
igual que el viento esconde el agua
como las flores que esconden lodo

una mirada no dice nada
y al mismo tiempo lo dice todo
como la lluvia sobre tu cara
o el viejo mapa de algún tesoro

como la lluvia sobre tu cara
o el viejo mapa de algún tesoro

una verdad no dice nada
y al mismo tiempo lo esconde todo
como una hoguera que no se apaga
como una piedra que nace polvo

si un día me faltas no seré nada
y al mismo tiempo lo seré todo
porque en tus ojos están mis alas
y está la orilla donde me ahogo

porque en tus ojos están mis alas
y está la orilla donde me ahogo
one word says nothing
and at the same time it hides everything
same as the wind hides the water
like the flowers that hide mud

one look says nothing
and at the same time it says everything
like the rain over your face
or the old map of some treasure

like the rain over your face
or the old map of some treasure

one truth says nothing
and at the same time it hides everything
like a blaze that won't extinguish
like a rock that is born dust

if one day you're gone I'll be nothing
and at the same time I'll be everything
because in your eyes are my wings
and is the shore where I drown

because in your eyes are my wings
and is the shore where I drown

Wow! I mean, wow! This song is sublime on so many different levels. The structure -- even the end, which sounds premature -- perfectly reflects what this song is about. It is nothing, and at the same time it says everything.
