I was station surfing on the way to work this morning. I hit WERS, which was playing jazz. I'm rarely in the mood for jazz in the morning, but before I hit the forward seek button again I noticed that the piece they were playing was in 5/4 — must be Brubeck's "Take Five," I reasoned, so I stayed on that frequency and soon heard the familiar riff. After "Take Five," the announcer talked briefly about the upcoming Newport Jazz Festival, mentioning that the Brubeck Quartet and Wynton Marsalis will be there, before playing a pleasant piece by Marsalis.

This all got me to thinking … I've never been to a jazz festival, and Newport Jazz Festival is highly acclaimed. The one Wynton Marsalis concert I've been to was the best concert I've EVER attended. And who doesn't love Dave Brubeck! Amongst those also playing that weekend will be Bela Fleck, Jean-Luc Ponty, Chick Corea, Joshua Redman, Christian McBride, and Roy Haynes, all artists I know and like. I'm wondering if I should go. It's not cheap, but it could be phenomenal musical experience. And Newport is so close, even though it's an outrageously pricey town during the summer. I wonder if the price of admission covers both Saturday and Sunday or if I have to pay for both days separately. Have any of you ever been to this festival? What was your experience there?

Update: The Thursday and Friday night events are separate admission, but I don't have much interest in them anyway. The $65 general lawn admission (the $100 Gold Circle tickets are all sold out) is good for both Saturday and Sunday.
