Received an e-mail from my boss this afternoon:

"the system seems to have gone down overnight and there are no emails that have arrived from today. Can you take a look."

I trust I don't need to explain what the problem there with that is. <bangs head on wall>

Boss
There is a good section in the Cryptonomicon that you sent me about the relative place of officers / bosses and their minions. Basically, it is the boss's duty to protect the minion from the world and from having to make (political) decisions while the minion ignores the world to concentrate on following orders. This bifurcated system is no longer workable in business although many people attempt to continue to use it.

What caused me the most trouble on my last job was being given orders that nobody wanted me to follow because modern supervisors cannot come out and tell minions to screw the client. That's against the law, even though it's what they want. Instead, I was told to provide support to the customers, most of whom were idiots (as shown by their doing business with us).

Re: Boss
I was starting to wonder if you guys had received that package, since neither you nor Cathy had confirmed receipt. I hope you're enjoying the book and that she liked the shot glass.
