Apparently my grandfather's birth certificate has been located. I doubt I'll have the necessary work authorization by the end of July, but it won't be too long now.

That's wonderful! I knew that outfit that said they couldn't locate it was too lazy to look in years around the year you thought he was born. You'll be an Italian citizen in four or five months and be able to return and work legally. Make sure you vote against Berlusconi in the next election!

Certificate
Pouring through folio volumes of hand-written documents looking for information on a particular person-related event is not a pleasant passtime. I suspect it's one of the major reasons geneological research gets abandoned. The correct notation may be illegible, smeared, faded, misspelled, on the wrong page, in the wrong volume, in the wrong city or year or simply overlooked. Hand-written records are never easy to work with.
