I keep getting invitations for LinkedIn, followed by incessant reminders that I've been invited by such and such, sometimes a friend or acquaintance and sometimes a complete stranger. I wish I would stop receiving these and, more importantly, I wish people would stop inviting me. It puts me in an awkward position if the person is a friend or acquaintance, because I don't want that person to think, wrongly, that I don't wish to stay connected in some way. I simply have absolutely no interest in joining any social networking sites: not LinkedIn, not Facebook, not Flavour-of-the-Day-Site. I have e-mail and I have phone, I post occasional updates on LJ, send locals periodic updates on singing gigs, and occasionally can be found on IM or Skype. I have no need for or spare time to devote to social networking sites. So, if you were contemplating adding me to your LinkedIn network, please don't: it's not a reflection on how I regard you personally when I ignore any attempts to get me to join this or any other social networking site.

I second that last comment. There is probably a "don't send me more invitations" link available to you.

HOWEVER, you might still consider joining linked-in. It's a business-focused site. I got my current job as a result of a linked-in contact! And I got previous consulting work through linked-in as well. Yes, it is a "social" network, but it's really a work-focused social network. (No, I do not work for linked-in).

Still, obviously the choice is yours as to what kind of online presence you present.

This has also been my experience. Linked In isn't anything like facebook - it's a place to put your work experience, and connect with co-workers that you might want to remain in touch with. They explicitly state you should only connect with people that you know professionally, or who might help you professionally... though some people don't follow that guideline.

My husband just found a new (better-paying, with benefits) job through a recruiter that found him on Linked In. I have written recommendations on my account that I could send to employers.

There are forums, but they're professionally oriented. I read the American Library Association forums, as well as the ones for my graduate school program. Mostly, it's about job advice, career news, etc. Definitely NOT social.


That said, if an online networking tool wouldn't be useful to you, don't use it. I login MAYBE once a month. This is a website that you don't really "fall behind" on, it's very easy to keep up with.
